What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is one of the eminent methods of treatment for a wide range of mental health issues, where the client discusses his/her problems with a trained psychotherapist and the therapist helps the client to tackle specific or general issues associated with mental health. This mode of treatment is also known as Talk Therapy. It’s a structured, research-based form of treatment for a variety of psychological problems and disorders. Since this is talk therapy, it demands active participation from the client rather than being passive.

Who is a Psychotherapist?

A psychotherapist is a trained professional who assists people with various mental health conditions such as stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia, addiction, and other psychological disorders. A psychotherapist won’t judge your feelings or emotions and does not pass advice or solutions. Rather, they listen, understand, acknowledge, analyse and interpret the client’s thoughts, emotions and behavior.

Getting started

Most of the mental health issues an individual suffers are the result of their years of painful experiences, beliefs, thoughts, parenting and many more. Similarly, psychotherapy is a long-term process where the individual understands, explores and unties their thoughts, acts, beliefs, life patterns, dilemmas, and themselves. Thus, therapy may also be considered as an act of reparenting. The First 2-4 sessions will be evaluation sessions. By the end of the evaluation sessions, the therapist will be able to gather some preliminary observations and both the client and therapist can decide whether they can positively work together in the future.

Things to consider

Therapy can also be considered as an emotional journey as it may not be always pleasant and the client may feel uncomfortable talking to a stranger and sharing their deepest emotions with them. During the course of the therapy, the client may experience multiple emotions like anger, guilt, anxiety, helplessness, frustration, loneliness and so on. Moreover, this is an abiding commitment and one needs to invest his/her time and money to get benefited from psychotherapy.  Yet, these concerns are insignificant as one will learn how to cope up with these emotions during the course of the therapy. This might help him/her to lead a peaceful and healthier life ever after.

How Counseling Helps

Centre for counselling & Psychotherapy

Counseling falls under the umbrella term talking therapy that helps people to overcome many challenges they are facing. Unlike animals, human beings have a complex emotional system. Sometimes it is difficult to find a balance. Counselling helps you to find that balance or stability between your thoughts and emotions. A counsellor is not somebody who sits down with you and tells you what to do. Instead, they'll encourage you to talk about what's troubling you so that you can figure out what's causing it and what your unique emotional states are.The counsellor may then work with you to get an insight of the problem which will eventually bring a change. The counselling is fruitful when the therapist acts as a supporting figure without being judgmental and helps you to find a different perspective.
